WHAT IS A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY

Security into the future

A Lasting Power of Attorney goes a few, but important, steps further than an ordinary Power of Attorney. It carries on, or 'lasts', even after you have become unable to manage your affairs, whether temporarily or permanently, because of an illness, disability or accident. It is also specifically designed for dealing with a person’s personal wishes about how they wish for their property & financial matters and their health and well-being issues to be managed in the long term.

Thinking and talking about what would happen if our health or our faculties deserted us is uncomfortable for all of us. Yet it's important to consider how much worse the situation would be if you had a serious accident or illness (e.g. Alzheimer's) without making arrangements for the management of your affairs and well-being.

Making a Lasting Power of Attorney can give us the peace of mind of knowing that if we do temporarily or permanently lose mental capacity that our affairs and our well-being will be managed in the way that we would choose by the people that we have chosen and trust.

You must be 18 or over and have mental capacity (the ability to make your own decisions) when you make your Lasting Power of Attorney.
